What is the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA)?  Definition below:

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, also known as FMLA, is a federal law that exists which allows employees up to twelve weeks of unpaid time off of work for qualified medical or family reasons.

Under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, an employee’s job status is guaranteed regardless of a qualifying need for time off. Companies are only eligible for FMLA if they employ 50 or more employees. Employees must also meet a minimum number of hours worked in order to be covered by FMLA.
